How to get from Newark Airport (EWR) to Manhattan

Newark Liberty is in New Jersey, about 15 miles southwest of Midtown, and the Hudson River is the whole story: every road option has to squeeze through the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel (tolled, and slow at rush hour), while the train goes under the river in about 30 minutes. That is why NJ Transit is the default for most travelers, and a car makes sense mainly for luggage, groups and late arrivals.

Here is every realistic option — NJ Transit and Amtrak via the AirTrain, the Newark Airport Express bus, the official taxi stand and Uber/Lyft — with prices from NJ Transit, the Port Authority and the MTA as of September 2026, cheapest first, followed by what a pre-booked private car adds.

Comparison

Every option, side by side

  • AirTrain + NJ Transit train

    Price
$17.25 one way to Penn Station, AirTrain included — buy in the app or at a machine ($5 more on board)
    Time
45–60 min to Penn Station (about 30 min on the train)

Almost everyone headed to Midtown with manageable luggage — it is the cheapest option and the most predictable at rush hour.

On weekdays from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. through November 13, 2026, the AirTrain does not run between the terminals and the rail station; shuttle buses replace it and add 10–15 minutes.

  • Newark Airport Express bus

    Price
$23.50 one way / $39.50 round trip as listed by the airport — confirm on Coach USA when you buy
    Time
50–75 min depending on tunnel traffic

Travelers staying near Port Authority, Bryant Park or Grand Central who would rather not change trains with bags.

It sits in the same Lincoln Tunnel traffic as a taxi, so at rush hour it can take well over an hour.

  • Amtrak

    Price
Varies by train and how far ahead you buy — usually more than NJ Transit; the AirTrain fee is included in the ticket
    Time
    40–55 min to Penn Station

Travelers already holding an Amtrak ticket or continuing beyond New York on the Northeast Corridor.

You must have a ticket before boarding, and for the same short hop NJ Transit is cheaper and runs more often.

  • Taxi from the official stand

    Price
    $60–$80 zone fare by Manhattan street (e.g., $65 for W 14th–W 50th) + $2 access fee + $1 per bag + $5 East Side + $10 rush hour + tunnel toll + Manhattan congestion toll + tip
    Time
40–75 min; longer at rush hour

Up to four people landing at an off-peak hour who want to leave straight from the curb.

The extras add up: the airport fee, bags, East Side and rush-hour surcharges, the tunnel toll and the Manhattan congestion toll all come on top of the zone fare.

  • Uber / Lyft

    Price
Varies with demand and time of day — check the app; surge pricing applies and tolls are added
    Time
40–75 min plus the wait for the car

Solo travelers landing at a quiet hour when the app quote beats the taxi's zone fare plus extras.

Quotes jump when several flights land together or at rush hour, and Terminal C pickups are on the 3rd floor of the parking garage, a walk from arrivals.

  • Private car (Luxury Partner VIP)

    Price
From $123, fixed price with tolls included
    Time
40–75 min; longer at rush hour

Families, lots of luggage, late arrivals and business trips.

You book ahead, and it costs more than public transit.

What a pre-booked private car adds

A pre-booked car from Luxury Partner VIP takes the guesswork out of the tunnel: the price you see before booking is fixed and already includes tolls and the $5 airport fee, whatever the traffic does. Your chauffeur follows the flight, waits 15 minutes free after landing (then $25 per 15-minute block) and coordinates the meeting point by phone or WhatsApp — or meets you inside the terminal with a name sign if you add meet & greet ($25).

Choose a Comfort or Electric sedan (3 passengers, 3 bags), an SUV Premier (6 passengers, 6 bags) or a Mini-Van XL (4 passengers, 4 bags), with child seats on request ($25). Pay online by card or in cash to the chauffeur, and cancel free up to 30 minutes before pickup. If it is just you and a carry-on at midday, take NJ Transit — the car is for luggage, groups, late arrivals and anyone who wants the fare settled before they land.

More about our Newark Airport Car Service (EWR)

Where each option leaves from at Newark

Train: follow the AirTrain signs from any terminal to Newark Liberty International Airport Station (7–20 minutes depending on the terminal), then board an NJ Transit Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line train, or Amtrak, toward New York. Your NJ Transit or Amtrak ticket covers the AirTrain; without one the AirTrain costs $8.75. During the weekday AirTrain outage (5 a.m.–3 p.m. through November 13, 2026) follow the “AirTrain Construction Partial Outage” signs to the shuttle buses.

Bus: the Newark Airport Express stops at Terminals A, B and C and runs to Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st St between 8th and 9th Avenues), Bryant Park (42nd St and 5th Ave) and Grand Central (41st St between Lexington and Park). A ticket is valid on any scheduled departure.

Taxi and app rides: the official taxi stands are outside arrivals (Level 1) at each terminal — only use them, and never a driver who approaches you inside. Uber and Lyft pick up on the arrivals level across the street at Terminal A, on the terminal frontage at Terminal B and on floor 3 of the Terminal C garage.

Rush hour, tolls and timing

The tunnels set the schedule. Newark taxis add a $10 rush-hour surcharge on New York trips weekdays 6–10 a.m. and 3–8 p.m. and weekends noon–9 p.m., and the Port Authority's tunnel toll is higher at peak too: $16.79 versus $14.79 with E-ZPass for a car in 2026, charged only entering New York. Trips ending below 60th Street also pay the MTA's Congestion Relief Zone toll, which taxis and app rides pass on to the passenger.

In those hours the NJ Transit train is usually faster than any car — about 30 minutes from the airport station to Penn Station, with no toll and no surge. If you must ride at rush hour, a fixed-price private car at least removes the surprise, because tolls are built into the quote.

NJ Transit fares are the same all day and the AirTrain fee does not change by time; the only “peak” effect on the train is a fuller carriage.

Luggage, families and groups

NJ Transit trains have room for bags and Penn Station has elevators, but you carry your luggage through the AirTrain transfer and, on weekday mornings until November 2026, onto a shuttle bus. With one suitcase each it is fine; with a family's worth of luggage it is a workout.

Newark taxis charge $1 per bag including carry-ons and take up to four passengers (five in a minivan), so a family of five may need two cabs. A private SUV takes 6 people and 6 bags on one fixed fare, with child seats on request ($25).

The express bus stows luggage in the hold and drops you in Midtown, which works well for two adults with big suitcases heading to a hotel near Grand Central or Port Authority.

Late-night arrivals

NJ Transit trains do not run all night and late Amtrak departures are sparse, so check the NJ Transit app for the last train from the airport station before you rely on it. Overnight (11 p.m.–5 a.m.) the AirTrain serves Terminals B and C every 15 minutes, with a shuttle covering Terminal A.

Taxis run from the stands day and night; the only time-based extra on the published rate card is the rush-hour surcharge, which on weekends runs until 9 p.m. App fares are often lowest after midnight but can spike when a bank of delayed flights lands together.

For a late landing with family, a pre-booked car is the low-stress option: the chauffeur is following your arrival, the price is already set with tolls included, and you skip the stand.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

Newark taxis use flat zone fares by Manhattan street: $60 to the Battery–W 13th St, $65 to W 14th–W 50th, $70 to W 51st–W 96th, $75 to W 97th–W 185th and $80 above that. Add a $2 airport access fee, $1 per bag, $5 for East Side destinations between the Battery and 145th St, $10 at rush hour (weekdays 6–10 a.m. and 3–8 p.m., weekends noon–9 p.m.), the tunnel toll, the Manhattan congestion toll below 60th Street and the tip. A Midtown trip on a weekday evening typically ends up around $100 or more.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Newark?

It can be at quiet times, but there is no fixed price: Uber and Lyft quotes change with demand and time of day, surge pricing applies when many flights arrive together, and tolls are added on top. Compare the in-app quote with the taxi's zone fare plus its extras before you choose.

What is the cheapest way from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

AirTrain plus NJ Transit: $17.25 one way to Penn Station with the AirTrain fee included, about 30 minutes on the train. For Lower Manhattan, NJ Transit lists a ticket to Newark Penn Station at $12.30 plus the $3.25 PATH fare to World Trade Center, which is a little cheaper but involves two changes.

How long does it take from Newark to Manhattan?

Train: about 30 minutes from the airport rail station to Penn Station, so 45–60 minutes door to door with the AirTrain. Car, taxi or bus: 40–60 minutes with clear roads and 75 minutes or more at rush hour, since everything funnels into the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel.

Is the AirTrain Newark free?

Between terminals, parking and rental cars, yes. To reach the rail station and public transit it costs $8.75 unless you hold an NJ Transit or Amtrak ticket, which includes it. Note the weekday partial shutdown (5 a.m.–3 p.m. through November 13, 2026), when shuttle buses run between the terminals and the station.

Is there a bus from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

Yes. The Newark Airport Express (Coach USA) runs from all three terminals to Port Authority Bus Terminal, Bryant Park and Grand Central in about 50 minutes; the airport lists it at $23.50 one way or $39.50 round trip. NJ Transit local buses also link the terminals with Newark Penn Station, where PATH trains continue to Manhattan for $3.25.
